Love Prevails
Beautifully executed movie with heavyweight casts and great soundtracks. LOVE has everything you want from a romance movie. Good looking people, heart wrenching story, terminal and life degrading illnesses, unrequited love, nice cinematography and did i mention good soundtracks?
First, i think indonesian movie producer should get more creative naming a movie. LOVE sounds so generic and uninspiring and it somehow resembles an awfully acted sinetron that mock the intelligence of indonesian people. This movie could have had a more unique and more appealing title, like LOVE IS A FIVE LETTER WORD, or LOVE SAVES, or LOVE ACTUALLY IS A MARKETING GIMMICK TO TRICK YOU INTO BUYING LOTS AND LOTS OF STUFFS SO YOU CONSTANTLY UNABLE TO FEEL SATISFIED ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES, or OH HAI THIS IS A VELNTINE’S DAY PLS GO SEE OUR MOVIE, KTHXBYE!.
Five Stories
LOVE tells five tales of love. Nugroho (Sophan Sophiaan) meets Lestari (Widyawati), Tere (Luna Maya) and Awin (Darius Sinathrya), Gilang (Surya Saputra) and Miranda (Wulan Guritno) with their autistic daughter Icha, Restu (Irwansyah) and Dinda (Laudya Cinthya Bella), Rama (Fauzi Baadila) and Iin (Acha Septriasa).
Nugroho is an oldman with alzheimer disease (a disease that makes you forget things). One day he met Lestari, a beautiful lady owner of a warung soto. Somehow they both reminded each other of their late spouses. Unfortunately, because of his alzheimer, Nugroho always forgets Lestari. Which makes me wonder whether he really forgets her or it is just a cheap trick to have a free soto ayam
Tere is a successfull writer. She met Awin, a book store clerk, in his workplace. They had a memorable first encounter and eventually fall in love with each other. Awin turns out to be a writer too, although he has never published a book before. So Tere tries to help him publish one, but somehow it pisses off Awin. What a jerk!
Gilang and Miranda married when they were young and foolish because Miranda got knocked up. Now they’ve got a lovely autistic daughter , Icha. Their marriage has a problem, Miranda doesn’t love Gilang.
Restu is a college student, he met Dinda in a bus station. It’s a love at first sight. But Restu has no idea that Dinda has a terminal illness.
Rama works in a printing agency, he met Iin, a Sukabumian girl that went to Jakarta to find her lover. Iin is stone broke so Rama helps her and let her stays in his home until she find her lover.
Actually, I Think LOVE is pretty similar to Love Actually… and a bunch of more internationally known movies
It’s hard for me not to compare this movie to Love Actually (2003), because they both have the word LOVE in the title, released around Valentine’s Day and have multiple stories that loosely interrelated with each other. Although LOVE has a more serious atmosphere. There is nothing saying SERIOUS more seriously than a cancer, autism and alzheimer. It’s like Love Actually plus three times A Walk to Remember. Hey, that would make even more interesting movie title. LOVE IS LOVE ACTUALLY PLUS THREE TIMES A WALK TO REMEMBER. Well, to make it more efficient, lets just say LOVE IS LOVE ACTUALLY PLUS THREE WALKS TO REMEMBER
But LOVE Is A Beautiful and Decently Acted Movie.. thanks to The Gutawas
LOVE is a beautiful movie. I enjoy watching it. It has a fair share of fun moments, the “awww” moments and sad moments. I suspect it’s mostly because the music in this movie. Sempurna, covered by Gita Gutawa, is so beautiful and properly set the mood earlier in the movie. There are also songs that i grew up with, like Anugerah Terindah Yang Pernah Kumiliki by Sheila on 7 and Kasih Tak Sampai by Padi. Those songs remind me of some certain moment in my life, so it worked, i somehow felt i could relate to the story.
Erwin Gutawa and The Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra has done a pretty nice job arranging (scoring?) the music.
LOVE is a decently acted movie. It is not surprising because the casts are reputable actors and actresses. I enjoy Widyawati’s performance, she looks beautiful, maybe her real life relationship with Sophan Sophiaan really helps. Acha Septriasa as a naive country girl also performed well, she is adorable.
Love Doesn’t Need Logic, Does it?
I think similarities with other movies are unavoidable. Romance movies do have certain formulas to really sell. The story of Lestari who loves Nugroho, Restu who loves terminally ill Dinda tell us about unconditional love. It’s a vague concept for me, how a man-woman loving unconditionally started, and this movie fails to convince me why Lestari loves Nugroho, and why Restu loves Dinda, other than they are both good looking. Well, i certainly would kill to have the love of somebody as beautiful as Dinda. But i’m sure nobody in this world is more shallow an dumber than me to love somebody unconditionally just by her look.
LOVE is enjoyable and i think i’m going to see it again when i have the chance. It’s not the most romantic movie ever, but it’s well executed and has nice stories. Just don’t think too much about it when you see this kind of movie. Because love doesn’t need logic, some time we love someone just for the sake of loving her. Well, i really do hope so, because if logic is required to love someone, then i’m doomed.
